More than 2000 people attended the performance, including many M.P.'s and Ambassadors. In connection to our unit on Aboriginal People, the Grade Six class at the Paul Penna Downtown Jewish Day School studied Native art. The paintings are based on the artistic style of Norval Morrisseau, a Native Canadian. Morrisseau is known for his “X-ray” style of painting which portrays the interior and exterior outline of a figure. Morriseau uses this technique in order to allow his viewers to see the energy and spirit found within each image. Each student chose a cycle or aspect of nature with which they could identify and then created their Morrisseau-like painting. | | | Michael Kuss, the meteorologist at Global TV, visited the Grade 5 class at the Paul Penna Downtown Jewish Day School. As part of their integrated unit on weather, Mr. Kuss taught them about the highs and lows of air pressure.
He also gave them a little insight into what is involved in predicting the weather. | Senior Kindergarten students performed a mitzvah to help those less fortunate. Here, representatives from Ve'Ahavta arrived in class to collect sock donations and freshly baked snacks. These were delivered to the homeless by Ve'Ahavta's van.

The process of designing and building projects using the computer and Lego provides students with an opportunity to apply many curricular concepts in an authentic, real-life problem-solving activity. These projects are both hands-on and "minds-on", as students set goals, test hypotheses, and reflect on the questions that arise as they build computer-controlled inventions. | | | | | | | | | The Toronto Heschel School recently held a Mitzvah Day, with more than 250 students, parents and teachers participating. The planted trees, tilled the school gardens, picked up garbage in a nearby ravine, assembled welcome baskets for Toronto newcomers, entertained seniors and packed knapsacks for people living on the streets. | |

The main focus of this model has been on building literacy and numeracy skills to set children up for success in elementary school and beyond. As unique as their personalities are, so too are the students' learning styles. Based on Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, the program focuses on the unique personalities and learning styles of the students. |  |
