It has an unusual triangular shape with a menorah design on the top and a stylized Star of David with the initials of the charity on two sides. Beth Tzedec Reuben and Helene Dennis Museum BT1707 Gift of Sheila Rothman | |  | Chevra Tomchei Torah pushke Book form, imitation red and black leather and brass with gilded lettering; 13.5 x 9 x 2.5 cm Tomchei Torah Society, Brooklyn, New York circa 1920 - 1930 This unusual charity box takes the form of a book with a slot at the top for coins or bills. The donations in this box were for the Bachurim (Yeshiva students) in Central and Eastern Europe. A copy of a woodcut by Josef Margolies entitled "The Hebrew Lesson" adorns the alternate side which illustrates the cause that the charity aimed to suport - giving young men a Jewish education. Beth Tzedec Reuben and Helene Dennis Museum, BT1708 Gift of Sheila Rothman | |  | Colel Chabad pushke Cardboard with tin top, plastic removable bottm, yellow, 13 x 7 cm circa 1960s Colel Chabad was founded in 1788 by the first Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi. It is the oldest continuously operating Jewish charity of its kind in Israel and is an apolitical organization which helps Jews in distress regardless of geographical location or situation. This box highlights a variety of causes for which the charity collects and distributes funds. Ontario Jewish Archives, Accession #89-2/1, Artifact #1769 | |  | Palmerston Avenue Synagogue pushke Tin, silver, 17 x 12 cm Toronto, Ontario circa 1925 This large, round early twentieth century pushke is handmade of tin with a handle and a latched lid with a slot for coins. It was used by the congregation of Agudath Israel Anshei Sfard, later referred to as the Palmerston Avenue Synagogue. The congregation was founded in 1914, but did not move into the Palmerston building until 1925. In 1978 the building was demolished and the congregation moved to McGillivray Street.
